Supplement Review – Wobenzym N

It’s got a weird name, but this proteolytic enzyme can work wonders for athletes. Enzymes are proteins that facilitate chemical reactions in living organisms. They are required for every single chemical action that takes place in your body. All of your tissues, muscles, bones, organs and cells are run by enzymes.

Proteolytic enzymes have many specific benefits for athletes:

  • Supports joint and tendon health
  • Relief of muscle soreness
  • Inflammation reduction
  • Reduce the risk of blood clots
  • Bolster immune system
  • Assist in killing bacteria, viruses, molds and fungi

After doing some quick research, I can across a recent study done in January of this year, where Wobenzym was compared to a prescription NSAID (such as Aclonac, Cataflam and Voltaren) diclofenac in a 12 weeks trial. Subjects with moderate-to-severe painful knee Osteoarthritis experienced relief in pain and increased function when taking Wobenzym. Improvement in pain scores did not differ between subjects treated with Wobenzym or the NSAID, and both treatment groups improved compared to placebo.  It was also concluded that Wobenzym is associated with fewer adverse events and, therefore, may be appropriate for long-term use, unlike the prescription medications.

For the last three years, I’ve taken Wobenzym N every morning on an empty stomach (at least 45 minutes prior to eating). I am happy to report that I have gone the last three triathlon training seasons without injury – which is a very rare occurrence in this sport.

The brand that I trust when it comes to supplements is Garden of Life. Their exact Wobenzym N formula has been featured in six human clinical studies with 2,489 patients studied. These studies show temporary relief from everyday aches, pains and muscle soreness, increased flexibility and mobility, and supports of joint and tendon health.

As part of my $200 reader giveaway, I will include 2 bottles (a 2 month’s supply) of the Garden of Life brand Wobenzym N that I take.
